Reduce Data Traffic, Enhance the Video Experience
The Media Fidelity® Suite Lossy Media Optimization application builds on the Lossless solution with two additional capabilities:
- Quality-aware transcoding of media content and adjustment of video output quality – according to the operator’s configuration – to reduce total file size
- Dynamic bandwidth shaping to reduce the video transmission bit rate below the available network throughput at any point in time and thereby improve the user viewing experience
The media decoding, optimization and encoding process drives data reduction and device compatibility. All videos – including Flash, VP6 and .MP4 – can be transcoded into the H.264 format for network-efficient playback on laptops, netbooks, smartphones, and feature phones with standard media players.
Quality-Aware Transcoding
Operators can configure the level of video data reduction through four quality settings: high, medium, low, and lowest. The application minimizes the discernible impact on the user experience through innovative techniques that apply more compression to original videos of higher quality and less compression to original videos of lower quality. Operators can adjust output quality according to several parameters, including devices, websites, times of day, rate plans, and usage patterns. This flexibility enables service differentiation and fair use policy enforcement for a wide range of video consumption profiles.
Dynamic Bandwidth Shaping
Available bandwidth on wireless networks is constantly changing due to fading, congestion, movement, and other factors. When bandwidth falls below the throughput required for an internet video, stalling and rebuffering can degrade the user experience. Lossy Media Optimization solves this problem by dynamically adapting the transmission bit rate to the changing throughput of the network. Through minimally discernible quality adjustments made in real time, the application supports largely if not entirely uninterrupted video streaming.
