As one of the company's first employees in Europe, I am pleased to have been part of this growth and success. As the leader of the company's EMEA sales teams today, I am proud of our broad market footprint and enduring customer relationships.

Needless to say, business conditions for our customers have changed dramatically in the last couple of years. Web traffic on their networks has grown in response to the widespread deployment of 3G technology, the accelerated penetration of high-end smartphones like the iPhone and the Android, and the proliferation of increasingly richer applications and services – especially multimedia. Now, video play is overtaking web browsing, driving what our tier-one customers have characterized as a 300%-plus increase in overall data traffic year over year.

Next – the iPad, which will provide a real-time case study in the paradigm shift of multi-year network upgrade cycles lagging behind aggressive monthly growth in content and usage. A key lesson of 3G – which will become even more pronounced with the roll-out of 4G - is that consumer demand for data inevitably rises to fill the bandwidth available for it.

On May 11, Bytemobile will sponsor an Informa Telecoms & Media webinar on 'Meeting Consumer Expectations of the Mobile Internet Experience'. Dez O'Connor, head of Mobile ISP Domain Development at Deutsche Telekom, and Mike Hibberd, editorial director of Informa's Telecoms.com, will join Jeff Sanderson, our head of Pre-Sales in EMEA and Latin America, for a panel discussion of the various ways in which operators can deliver a superior user experience that will enable monetization of the data traffic surging through their networks.

I invite all of you to attend this webinar and to follow up with your Bytemobile account manager or other contact with questions and comments. In the same spirit, I would like to call your attention to Bytemobile University, which offers a range of live and web-based courses designed to help our customers deploy, use and grow Bytemobile solutions most effectively in their networks. Please check out the certification program and student testimonials to determine how you can utilize Bytemobile University to achieve maximum efficiency and productivity from your deployments.

The mobile data explosion is well under way, and Bytemobile has a comprehensive portfolio of solutions to address everything from traffic optimization and policy management in the core to value-added services in the data center. Your Bytemobile account team – fully supported by company resources across all functions and senior management – stands ready to help you manage the challenges of today while seizing the opportunities of tomorrow.

New Solutions for Network Operators

The first quarter of 2010 saw exciting product news from Bytemobile. The company announced new capabilities of its WebGate™ mobile internet gateway and added two new solutions to its market-leading optimization portfolio.

  • WebGate Service – New mobile internet gateway capabilities that help operators increase uptake of existing data plans, intelligently roll out new data plans and streamline the delivery of third-party content, while enforcing fair-use policies more efficiently. More information.
  • Smartphone Application Optimization – A new capability that extends data reduction and download speed-up to smartphone applications, thereby increasing the responsiveness of each application and improving consumer perceptions of network quality. More information.
  • Auto-Update Optimization – A new capability that enables network operators to control download rates based on network congestion, resulting in significant data reduction across traffic generated by automatic software updates. More information.

Bytemobile Customer Marketing Services

This case study profiles a recent joint marketing project with China Mobile Jiangsu Ltd. Bytemobile worked with the customer's marketing team to promote the value of its innovative web browsing service for handsets, while demonstrating key features to entice younger consumers to use the service.

Mr. Shen Jie, vice president, China Mobile Jiangsu, commented, "Bytemobile provides global insight into the positioning of mobile internet services and has applied that knowledge to the China market with impressive results. The company exemplifies what it means to be a partner, and we look forward to future joint projects." For more information.

Super Bowl XLIV Drives Mobile Data Surge

Bytemobile took a look at event-driven mobile data usage during Super Bowl XLIV, which was viewed live by more than 106 million people. Analysis of a cross-section of 3G networks in Bytemobile's U.S. customer base indicated a substantial increase in sports-related applications usage and resulting mobile data traffic around the game. Specific findings included the following:

  • Transactions on NFL.com increased by an average of 3.7 times
  • Transactions to Fox Sports increased by an average of 3.5 times
  • CBS Sports – the official sponsor of the 2010 Super Bowl – generated approximately 3.5 times the transactions that it does on a regular day

Bytemobile In the News

Reinforcing its market leadership in mobile data, Bytemobile continues to be featured in industry articles spanning trade and business media.

Snapshot of coverage:

It's no secret that wireless carriers have been struggling to figure out how to meet all the demands of smartphone and mobile device owners connecting their their 3G and wireless data networks. And with the 3G version of the Apple iPad about to land in consumers' hot little hands, telecom operators may have more to fear: tests from Bytemobile find that, on average, identical tasks performed on an iPad generate 2.5 times the wireless data traffic as those same tasks on an iPhone. – Digital Trends

Bytemobile is taking a broader view of optimization: rather than optimizing all traffic, Bytemobile's Unison platform tinkers with the application data stream only when needed based on the real-time conditions of the network. If a cellsite is clear, and there's no congestion in the backhaul or core networks, why mess with the application, asks Joel Brand, vice president of product management for Bytemobile. But if the network is even slightly congested, Unison can start removing extraneous bits from the data stream to smooth out the flow of applications across the network. –

Mobile Minute Metrics

Bytemobile released its first-quarter 2010 Mobile Minute Metrics report in February. The report anonymously sources the aggregate data traffic in a global cross-section of Bytemobile customers' wireless networks and provides insight into the current state of the mobile ecosystem.

Key data from the 1Q 2010 report:

  • Video is the dominant form of laptop-generated wireless traffic. However, automatic software updates consume 10% of the total laptop-generated volume in networks.
  • A minority of mobile data users consume the majority of network bandwidth – with 10% generating approximately 85% of total traffic.
  • Consistent with 4Q 2009, internet videos average approximately five minutes in length, but users watch them for an average of less than 60 seconds.
  • Generally, the majority of mobile videos are downloaded by more than one user, with 36% of videos downloaded up to 100 times and 6% of videos downloaded 1,000 times or more.
