New Capabilities for Network Operators Optimize Smartphone Applications and Auto-Updates
Bytemobile, Inc., the global leader in mobile internet solutions, today announced new capabilities of its Unison™ Mobile Internet Platform that extend the benefits of network-based optimization to smartphone-based applications and automatic software updates. The new capabilities complement Bytemobile’s market-leading web and video optimization solutions to further reduce network costs, while helping operators tackle network congestion brought on by significant increases in mobile data usage and new, fast-growing sources of data traffic.
“The mobile data industry is changing shape as the latest generation of wireless devices produces a massive amount of data from a wide variety of sources, such as web browsers, video players, embedded applications, application update downloads, and email,” said Joel Brand, vice president of Product Management at Bytemobile. “The latest additions to Bytemobile’s optimization portfolio help operators to cope with consumers’ insatiable appetite for data and applications, while delivering a high-quality mobile experience to their customers.”
Smartphone Application Optimization
Analyzing a cross-section of operators that service smartphones, recent research by Bytemobile indicates that application-generated traffic accounts for approximately 30% of total smartphone data volume in the network. According to the Silicon Valley Insider, in the six-month period from April to September 2009, application downloads on the Apple iPhone nearly doubled, from 5.3 million to 10.5 million per day.
Bytemobile’s new optimization capabilities extend data reduction and download speed-up to smartphone applications, thereby increasing the responsiveness of each application and improving consumer perceptions of network quality. Recent trials with tier-one operators have shown that these capabilities support an average of 30% data reduction across all application-based traffic.
Auto-Update Optimization
Today’s wireless devices, operating systems and applications are capable of automatically detecting the availability of new software releases and updates, downloading the new versions to the device, and then prompting the user to install them. Often, multiple devices served by an operator’s network download updates simultaneously, resulting in increased network congestion and decreased responsiveness for interactive applications. Analysis of a cross-section of 3G networks in Bytemobile’s customer base indicates that automatic software updates consume an average of 10% of the total traffic. The new auto-update capability enables operators to control download rates based on network congestion, resulting in significant data reduction across this traffic type.
