Bytemobile Joins Internet Watch Foundation to Support Minimization of Illegal Web Content

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., September 30, 2009

Bytemobile, Inc., the global leader in mobile internet solutions for wireless network operators, today announced that it has become a member of the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), joining more than 100 companies from a variety of industries in their battle against illegal content online. With its content filtering and traffic management expertise, Bytemobile supports the IWF’s efforts to eliminate illegal internet content — specifically, child sexual abuse content, criminally obscene content and incitement to racial hatred content.

IWF was established in 1996 by the UK internet industry and works in partnership with the wider online industry, law enforcement, government, the education sector, charities, international partners, and the public to minimize the availability of potentially illegal online content. As a result of the IWF’s self-regulatory approach, less than 1% of online child sexual abuse content has been hosted in the UK since 2003, down from 18% in 1997.

“The Internet Watch Foundation is committed to raising the profile of online protection and fighting against online content abuses with partners at home and abroad,” said Peter Robbins OBE, QPM, IWF Chief Executive. “To effectively combat illegal online content, we rely on the united support of the wider internet sector. We are grateful for Bytemobile’s commitment to our work and are delighted to welcome the company as a member.”

“Increasingly, people are using mobile devices to browse the Internet,” said Adrian Hall, Bytemobile chief marketing officer. “Many countries are enacting laws which require operators to offer technologies that ensure safe browsing for children and restrict access to illegal content. As a result, it has become imperative for wireless network operators to proactively respond and comply. We are pleased to add our support to these efforts by enabling operators to provide their subscribers with a safer mobile internet experience.”

When integrated with the IWF’s dynamic list of potentially illegal child sexual abuse URLs, Bytemobile’s Optimization and Services Node (OSN) Content Filtering application is able to block potential access to this content. Bytemobile is also affiliated with the U.S.-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Open Directory Project (DMOZ) — which powers the core services of the Web’s largest search engines and portals, including Netscape Search, AOL Search, Google, Lycos, HotBot, DirectHit, and hundreds of others.

About the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF)

IWF works in partnership with the online industry, law enforcement, government, the education sector, charities, international partners and the public to minimize the availability of potentially illegal content, specifically, child sexual abuse content hosted anywhere in the world and criminally obscene and incitement to racial hatred content hosted in the UK.

The IWF is an independent self-regulatory body, funded by the EU and the wider online industry, including internet service providers, mobile operators and manufacturers, content service providers, filtering companies, search providers, trade associations and the financial sector as well as other organizations that support it for corporate social responsibility reasons.

It helps internet service providers and hosting companies to combat abuse of their networks through IWF’s national ‘notice and take-down’ service which alerts them to potentially illegal content within IWF’s remit on their systems and IWF provides unique data to law enforcement partners in the UK and abroad to assist investigations into the distributers of potentially illegal online content. As a result of this partnership approach, less than 1% of child sexual abuse content, known to the IWF, has apparently been hosted in the UK since 2003, down from 18% in 1997.

IWF strives to create continued awareness of the role and purpose of the IWF and aim to foster trust and reassurance in the internet for current and future users. IWF’s self-regulatory partnership approach is widely recognized as a model of good practice in combating the abuse of technology for the dissemination of illegal content.

Please note that "child pornography", "child porn" and "kiddie porn" are not acceptable terms. The use of such language acts to legitimize images which are not pornography, rather, they are permanent records of children being sexually abused and as such should be referred to as child sexual abuse images.
