Bytemobile, Inc., the global leader in mobile internet solutions for network operators, today announced that WILLCOM, Inc. of Japan has deployed its embedded browser optimization (EBO) technology to accelerate web browsing for handset subscribers. WILLCOM launched its new and enhanced ‘Speed-up Service’ on September 11. Download speeds have increased by up to 2x from the existing clientless Speed-up Service and up to 4x from standard, unoptimized service.
WILLCOM customers who subscribe to the existing Speed-up Service pay no additional fee for the enhanced service. They can select four different levels of optimization with corresponding levels of screen image quality. WILLCOM currently deploys EBO for the ACCESS NetFront™ Browser on the JRC WX321J handset and the Opera Mobile EX on the Kyocera WX320K and WX320KR handsets.
“The speed of the network and the device has real value to our customers,” said Yoshioki Chika, director and executive vice president of WILLCOM. “As avid mobile web users, they demand the best possible experience on their handsets. Our long-standing relationship with Bytemobile — further strengthened by its successful partnerships with ACCESS CO., LTD. and Opera Software ASA — has enabled WILLCOM to consistently meet consumer expectations throughout Japan.”
“We are intensely focused on the development and delivery of innovative solutions for our customers,” said Nobuhiko Tsuji, vice president and general manager of Japan at Bytemobile. “We look forward to building on the success of this deployment so that WILLCOM can launch new mobile web and multimedia services for its subscribers.”
“The WILLCOM EBO deployment delivers the results of our partnership strategy with Opera, ACCESS and other leading browser providers,” said Adrian Hall, vice president of Marketing and Business Development at Bytemobile. “We see growing market demand for optimization of all elements of the user experience, and web browsing performance on the mobile device is now more vital than ever.”
Since 2004, WILLCOM (then DDI Pocket) has used Bytemobile’s Unison™ Optimization Services Node (OSN) Monaco™ Edition to power its network server-based Speed-up Service. EBO leverages OSN technology to speed data traffic between the mobile handset and the Internet. Techniques such as data reduction, protocol acceleration and content caching dynamically optimize the performance of both the server and the handset browser. Effective collaboration of the two ensures that resource-intensive web page processing is distributed from the browser to the server. As a result, download time is dramatically reduced, and the internet page is intelligently and transparently adapted to the handset display. Web browsing becomes truly mobile, without the user having to do anything special.
In addition to OSN Monaco Edition, Bytemobile’s Unison mobile internet protocol (IP) services include: Web Fidelity™ Service for open web browsing and Media Fidelity™ Service for PC-quality internet video play on feature phones and smartphones; content filtering for parental and operator content controls; and a WAP gateway for portal access on Wireless Application Protocol handsets. Deployed in the core data path of the operator’s network, the Unison platform provides seamless interoperability of deployed IP services, improved network efficiency and faster time to market.
