Bytemobile Eliminates IP Services Bottleneck with Breakthrough Unison Solution

Mobile Network Operators to Benefit with Quick-to-Market Services Architecture; Subscribers to Gain Faster, Richer Service Offerings

Mountain View, California - September 27, 2005

Bytemobile™, the leading provider of dynamic optimization solutions for wireless data, today announced its entry into the IP services market with Unison™, a new open architecture, which unifies, simplifies and accelerates operator networks while expanding their ability to deploy new fully integrated content dynamic services such as content filtering, dynamic portal optimization and content-based flexible billing. The announcement underscores Bytemobile’s expansion into wireless enhanced network services, brought about through its acquisition last spring of IP services company ProQuent Systems Corporation.

“Our operator customers are trying to implement fundamental changes in their networks, some of which are diametrically opposed,” said Steve Livingston, executive vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at Bytemobile. “Operators are seeking a way to streamline their core networks — to reduce both the number of boxes and the recurring need for interconnection and integration — and to unify service operation. At the same time, they’re trying to offer more choices and richer services for their subscribers. Bytemobile’s Unison solution meets both these needs by providing a content-dynamic networking environment, which consolidates services and eases their deployment.”

“Operators need to add services for growth and market differentiation,” said Iain Gillott, president of iGillottResearch, Inc. “But the market is complex and getting more so, with new devices, new content types and new formats, each of which require special handling. This leads to increased technical complexity and demands on the mobile operator, increasing operating costs and reducing efficiency in the network.”

Without Consolidation, Operators Challenged by Increasingly Lower Network Performance

In traditional multiple IP service deployments, operators encounter technical hurdles such as computational redundancy, operational inefficiency and increased latency as each service often performs the same packet processing and service applications unnecessarily. When left unchecked, these redundant processes dramatically drive up CAPEX, OPEX, and total cost of ownership. They also put a significant drag on the subscriber experience. At some point, the networks reach a threshold for service additions, when latency increases to the point that all services perform so poorly they become commercially undesirable.

With Consolidation, Simplification Speeds New Revenue Streams for Operators

The Unison solution incorporates Bytemobile’s Dynamic Services Engine, which consolidates and centralizes the lengthy series of multiple processing functions at the front end of the data path. Within the Dynamic Services Engine, data transactions are handled in an especially efficient way due to Fast Path Multiplexing that classifies all data bits in real-time and ensures that only the necessary packets for any transaction are processed. Those that don’t require service processing incur no delay.

“The consolidated approach appears timely and compelling,” said Monica Paolini, president of Senza Fili Research. “Because of such close packet processing, operators can have a better view of their networks and act on them in ways they haven’t previously been able to do.”

By implementing the consolidated and market-leading approach that Bytemobile’s Unison solution offers, operators can easily launch new revenue generating services while simultaneously achieving cost savings leading to further profitability. The IP services available in the Unison solution include TollGate Content Charging, ACCESS Mobile Content Filtering, Content Monitoring, Content Caching, WAP 2.0 Gateway and the Optimization Services Node for dynamic optimization of laptop and handset traffic. Additional value added services in the security, traffic shaping and QoS area are on the horizon.

Benefits of the Unison content dynamic networking solution include:

  • The multi-service solution maintains constant latency though the Dynamic Services Engine with Fast Path Multiplexing
  • Fast Path Multiplexing allows each service to process only the required data-not the entire data stream as with competitive solutions
  • Reduced CAPEX occurs through function specialization and centralization
  • Flexible, hardware-based IP detection point technology allows line rate classification and inspection and rapid support for new protocols
  • Reduced OPEX results from the integrated approach
  • The solution leverages existing, market leading dynamic optimization deployments

With traditional approaches, latency associated with service additions increases as each new service is added. With the Bytemobile Unison architecture, consolidated services and one-time processing of packets means latency remains constant, no matter how many services are added.
