UNIX Systems Administrator (Mountain View, CA)

Reporting to the IT Director, this position oversees the management of servers, networks and corporate network security and provides hands-on support for IT and Engineering labs consisting of 50 servers and 200 lab machines.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor all systems and implement best practices and procedures to minimize risk, outages and data loss
  • Install, configure and maintain different flavors of Unix (Solaris SPARC, x86 and Linux) environment
  • Resolve problems with operating systems, application software, hardware, networking, and performance on various Solaris and Red Hat Linux platforms
  • Install and configure packages and software applications, such as Apache, and web applications
  • Be part of a 24x7 on-call rotation
  • Be able to work in a dynamic environment; be willing to go outside of the job functions and help where needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent in another similar discipline
  • Minimum of five to seven years administering Unix systems in a similar size environment
  • Experience working with networking switches, routers and firewalls
  • Experience with NetApp (NAS and SAN) iSCSI storage
  • Ability to rebuild the Unix kernel and modify system parameters
  • Ability to write and maintain shell scripts, using Perl, Bash and csh to automate systems administration tasks
  • Strong familiarity with production monitoring services such as Nagios
  • Thorough knowledge of protocols such as TCP/IP, YP/NIS, NFS, AutoMounter, SSH, HTTP, FTP, DNS, Samba, and DHCP
  • Proficiency in jumpstart installation and ability to add and modify profiles
  • Experience with Solaris, Linux, Check Point firewall, NetScreen firewall, Cisco VPN, Veritas, autoloaders, Cisco and NETGEAR switches and routers, NetApp ONTAP, and Cisco terminal servers
  • Experience with network tools such as Ethereal
  • Some knowledge of Windows systems and protocols
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills to diagnose a problem and fix it
  • Achievement-oriented person, able to multitask and work well under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to accurately document work
  • Highly organized and self-motivated, able to work independently as well as with a team
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% of work time
  • Experience with NIS+ and LDAP a strong plus
  • Experience with Backup software and tape libraries management desirable
