Bytemobile Releases 1Q 2010 Global Metrics Report

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Bytemobile released its first-quarter 2010 Mobile Minute Metrics report today. The report anonymously sources the aggregate data traffic in a global cross-section of Bytemobile customers’ wireless networks and provides insight into the current state of the mobile ecosystem.

Analysis of various 3G networks indicates that the data traffic mix is consistent across geographies – with video as the dominant form of traffic.

Other key data from the report:

●Video is the dominant form of laptop-generated wireless traffic. However, automatic software updates consume 10% of the total laptop-generated volume in networks.

●A minority of mobile data users consume the majority of network bandwidth – with 10% generating approximately 85% of total traffic.

●Consistent with 4Q 2009, internet videos average approximately five minutes in length, but users watch them for an average of less than 60 seconds.

●Generally, the majority of mobile videos are downloaded by more than one user, with 36% of videos downloaded up to 100 times and 6% of videos downloaded 1,000 times or more.

Bytemobile Hosts First Mobile Minute Executive Forum

Mobile Minute Executive Forum

On October 13-14 in Amsterdam, Bytemobile held its inaugural Mobile Minute Executive Forum for tier-one operator customers and prospects in Europe.

The invitational event focused on mobile internet challenges and opportunities for the next three years and began with cocktails and dinner aboard a yacht cruising the Amsterdam canals. Attendees included management responsible for network operations and content at Life, Orange, T-Mobile, Telefónica, TeliaSonera, and VimpelCom, who shared their views on industry trends, the Bytemobile solutions deployed in their networks, and the company’s product strategy and roadmap.

Guest speakers included Denis McCauley of The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), who presented the results of a Bytemobile-sponsored survey of mobile ecosystem executives in late 2008; Ivan Breton and Johan Hörberg of TeliaSonera, who discussed the group’s Telia SurfOpen strategy for open mobile web browsing; and Ken Hart of Yahoo! Europe, who delivered the internet brand’s perspective on mobile user behavior and its implications for operators.

The Bytemobile management speakers – Joel Brand, Saurav Chopra, Adrian Hall, and Nick Henry – addressed topics ranging from the company’s product portfolio and its value proposition for operators to the market opportunity for mobile analytics solutions and the evolution of data services that personalize the user experience. Chief Marketing Officer Adrian Hall led a panel session on operator feedback regarding Bytemobile products, services and relationships, as well as the event itself.

Attendee comments on the first Executive Forum included the following:

  • The discussions with other operators was especially useful
  • This has been a very informative and useful event
  • Good initiative – I liked best the opportunity to meet with other operators

The interaction among operators was exemplified by a spontaneous white-boarding session in which Orange, T-Mobile and VimpelCom shared their respective ideas on data service implementation. Such ad hoc meetings occurred throughout the day and underscored the true value of the event in bringing Bytemobile customers together on common ground.

The Executive Forum is part of Bytemobile’s Mobile Minute thought leadership program for customers, prospects and partners in the global mobile ecosystem. Currently, the company plans to make the Executive Forum an annual event and expand it to other geographic regions. For more information, please contact me at gcarey@bytemobile.com.

Mobile Minute Webinar Update: Making a Better Mobile Browser – Register Now

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Making a better mobile browser

The historical limitations of the mobile web browsing experience are well known to consumers worldwide. What can wireless network operators and their partners in the mobile ecosystem do to overcome these limitations and ensure customer satisfaction leading to increased data usage and reduced churn?

Please join Orange Group, comScore and Bytemobile at 11:00 a.m. EDT on Thursday, June 18, as we address these and other vital questions in the second Mobile Minute webinar of the 2009 season.

The June 18 event – as advertised above in selected FierceMarkets publications – will be led by FierceWireless as part of its FierceLive! webinar program. Editor-in-Chief Sue Marek will moderate the discussion among Phil Parry, mobile browser interaction manager at Orange Group; Mark Donovan, senior analyst at Comscore; and Adrian Hall, chief marketing officer at Bytemobile.

See here for details and registration instructions. The third Mobile Minute webinar on the changing traffic mix in wireless networks will be held on July 15.

“Mobile data pricing – flat and getting flatter”: A Report on the May 27 Mobile Minute Webinar

Monday, June 1st, 2009

On May 27, we kicked off the 2009 series of Mobile Minute webinars with “Mobile Data Caps: Can Carriers Profitably Control Data Usage?” This event – led by FierceWireless as part of its FierceLive! webinar program – drew 365 registrations and 173 unique live visitors from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Latin America, the U.S., and Canada.

Webinar panelists included (from left to right below) John Jackson, vice president of Research at CCS Insight and former vice president of the mobile and wireless practice at Yankee Group; Larry Socher, global lead for the Network Offering Group at Accenture; and Adrian Hall, chief marketing officer at Bytemobile.

Vice President of Research at CCS Insight Global lead for the Network Offering Group at Accenture CMO Bytemobile
FierceWireless Executive Editor Lynnette Luna moderated the panel.

John Jackson led off with the assertion that data pricing is a dire concern – ‘flat and getting flatter’. He argued that while dramatic growth in mobile data traffic will continue, network operators cannot profitably grow their data business with the current generation of network technologies. Although many consider Long-Term Evolution (LTE) the ‘default panacea’, it will not meet all of the complex and interdependent functional requirements for keeping up with data demand. According to Jackson, carriers have a ‘long-term identity crisis’ – value-added content provider versus bit pipe – that will require much more than network cost reduction to resolve.

Larry Socher of Accenture addressed future drivers of mobile revenue growth for operators – new data and entertainment applications, convergence and the ‘always connected’ lifestyle of consumers, and interconnectivity of mobile and fixed devices. He stressed the importance of integrated value-added services in customer retention and highlighted the emergence of vertical applications – e.g., on-board automotive – enabled by lower-cost mobile devices with ubiquitous connectivity.

Adrian Hall presented the Bytemobile perspective on the discussion, emphasizing the forces of convergence, personalization, openness, and cost control in moving mobile data forward. He cited a seminal finding of an October 2008 survey of industry senior executives conducted by The Economist Intelligence Unit – that charging variable prices for bandwidth consumption at different times of day will be an important future source of revenue for operators – and industry research on the impact of uncontrolled data usage on operators’ profitability. Hall closed with a quick summary of the business benefits of the Bytemobile product portfolio, referencing specific points made earlier by Jackson and Socher.

Lynnette Luna referred to the webinar in an article in the May 28 edition of FierceBroadbandWireless and the June 1 edition of FierceWireless.

Following the panel presentations, Luna took selected questions from the online participants. In addition, the audience was polled on a multiple-choice question, which appears below with a chart of the answers selected by percentage of the total respondents.

The majority selection of differentiated service packaging and pricing provides further validation of the value proposition of Bytemobile applications such as OSN WebGate™ Service and Media Fidelity™ Suite Media Optimization in enabling operators to control and monetize data usage as traffic continues to grow.

Please note that our next webinar – “Making a Better Mobile Browser”, also led by FierceWireless – is scheduled for June 18. You can register here.
