A few months ago, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and Bytemobile partnered on a survey of more than 230 executives from the mobile ecosystem in order to assess how wireless network operators and other service providers plan to navigate the economic downturn, while continuing to drive mobile data growth.

This week, Mobile Entertainment published an article by Bytemobile’s own Graham Carey, marketing director for EMEA. In the article, Carey discusses the current state of the mobile internet industry and provides a forward-looking perspective on the future of data services based on the results of the EIU-Bytemobile study.

In the last post (July 29), we summarized the changing dynamics of the mobile ecosystem. To recap, we are witnessing two strong phenomena today. On one hand, we have a combination of explosive data growth and declining data plan rates. On the other hand, we see the mobile ecosystem power structure shifting from network operators to other ecosystem players like device manufacturers (Apple, Nokia, Samsung) and big internet brands (Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!).

The Shifting Economics of the Mobile Internet

The year 2008 has seen a surge of mobile data in the marketplace. Wireless network operators worldwide are reporting record growth in data traffic. Most operators in Europe have reported an eightfold increase from 2006, with some reporting a three- to fourfold increase from 2007. The phenomenon has also occurred in North America, with tier-one operators reporting data traffic growth of 10% per month. (more…)
